Parallax occurs when the reticle and the target image are not on the same focal plane. This makes the reticle appear to move against the target when you shift your head or change your shooting position. Adjusting parallax ensures that the reticle and target stay perfectly aligned, even if you move your head slightly.
Steps to Adjust Parallax

Locate the Parallax Adjustment
Most scopes have a side focus knob (on the left side of the scope). -
Set Your Target Distance
Determine the distance you’ll be shooting (e.g., 100 yards). Many scopes have distance markings on the parallax adjustment for quick reference. -
Look Through the Scope
Aim at your target and slightly move your head side to side without moving the rifle. -
Adjust Until Reticle Is Stable
Turn the parallax knob until the reticle no longer appears to shift against the target when you move your head. This means the reticle and target are on the same focal plane.
Why It Matters
- Proper parallax adjustment improves accuracy, especially at long ranges or high magnification.
- At short ranges or low magnification, parallax error is minimal, but adjusting it is still good practice.
